Three step routines: Self and peer evaluation of written work

THREE STEP ROUTINES

Self and peer evaluation of written work

This is a three-step approach to self and peer evaluation of written work but it could work equally well with oral work as well.

1 Each learner produces a piece of writing on a particular topic. In my writing portfolios, students often write responses to a question in a ten-line space in their portfolios.

2 After writing, the learners do an evaluation of their writing. Set the goal that each learner should identify three issues in the language they have used that could relate to the use of vocabulary or grammar. It’s important to set the very specific target of identifying three points because it focuses attention on a specific goal. Tell learners to note the three points on their mini whiteboards.

3 After identifying three points, the learners should share their findings with a partner whose role is to confirm the findings or to question them depending on their opinion. The process can then be repeated with peer evaluation of the writing to try to identify a different set of three points.
